Bring It! New Plymouth

Nearly 40 cafes are partnering with the NPDC campaign that is encouraging people to 'Bring It’. You can help reduce the number of single-use plastic takeaway containers going to the landfill by bringing your own containers.
12 businesses will even offer you a discount so check out the map to see where you might like to buy lunch this week! Pictured below is Courtney from the Federal Store.

Climate Ambitions Business Event

Wednesday 14th September 5:30 - 7 pm at Manifold 21 Devon St West Learn how to reduce your carbon emissions in your business by hearing from Climate Navigator - Jamie Silk and a panel of local businesses including Dustin Courage from NPDC, Catherine Taiapa from Armatec and Carol O’Sullivan from Powerco. Collecting rainwater has many benefits for your plants, as it contains nitrates instead of chlorine. Put water collection drums wherever you are gardening and sowing your seeds for an enjoyable gardening routine. No doubt they will be full of bountiful Taranaki rain!

The Backyard of the Month

Here is a recent photo of part of Maria’s garden. Peihana Farm, situated in the Okoki valley, just north of Urenui, is a small-scale food producer that exemplifies social enterprise and supporting local. Through her work on a 4-hectare property, Maria Lempriere offers homesteading workshops. She grows a diverse range of fruit, nuts, veggies, herbs, and flowers from her large-scale kitchen garden, and makes preserves, cordials, and bakes from her commercial kitchen. She also coordinates up to 14 other North Taranaki growers and producers who contribute to her popular weekly hampers. Check out her workshops during the Trail!

St Mary’s Community Garden

The St Mary’s Community Garden is a place to learn new skills, build friendships and create a bountiful garden. We will be propagating seeds alongside early childhood centres and schools throughout September. Hāwera High School students have also painted beautiful birds and tool boxes to liven up the space.

Be involved in this awesome mahi by coming along to our working bees and garden planning where we will plant more bee and butterfly plants and begin our shelter/outdoor education space/toolshed building.

Meet the Team - Joe Turton

As a passionate educator, Joe is excited to lead the team as an Operations Team leader with the goal of making Taranaki a healthier region. Joe was born in the United Kingdom but grew up in Inglewood and has returned to New Plymouth with whānau after spending 15 years overseas where he co-founded a Green School in Guatemala.
