The George Mason scholarships are awarded annually to enable young graduates to pursue a course of study relating to the Taranaki region and its natural world.
In the first of our lecture series, University of Auckland PhD student Geoff Lerner will discuss his work which is designed to improve our understanding of the dangers posed by pyroclastic flows and lahars in Taranaki. His research will contribute to a hazard map of the area surrounding Taranaki’s volcano that will help in planning for volcanic mass flows caused by future eruptions.
He will be followed by Elizabeth Elliot-Hogg, a student at the University of Waikato, who will outline her ongoing research for her PhD into the contribution the ecologically restored sites in urban areas can make to native bird conservation and reconnecting residents with nature. Her studies include extensive fieldwork in New Plymouth and Hamilton.
