Traditional Woodworking for Kids: Bows and Arrows

  • 465 Ohanga Road Onaero, Taranaki, 4383 New Zealand (map)

BOWS & ARROWS (from scratch)
In this workshop we make a simple but powerful bow from thick-walled bamboo, a quiver-full of feather-fletched arrows and a painted target.
A firm favourite with the children, the bows & arrows (from scratch) workshop teaches an incredible array of traditional woodwork skills. Children use vintage draw knives and shaving-horses, whittling knives, hand saws, coping saws, rasps, sandpaper and natural fibres as the learn to whittle, shape, notch, lash, knot, fletch, and paint. It's a truly satisfying experience for the children and the smiles of delight as their arrows fly smoothly over the field or go thwacking soundly into a target is a very rewarding experience for parents and teachers alike!

The workshop costs $45 per child which includes all tools, materials and tuition, and parents are welcome to attend and participate for free.
Covered shoes, warm clothes, a water bottle and lunch are all that the children need to bring. The day is peppered with games, laughter, and good food to provide a nice balance from the intense concentration and hard work of making.
Bring the whole family for a lovely creative day in the country....
