Weave a Harakeke Shopping Bag (Stratford)

  • Stratford War Memorial Centre Stratford New Zealand (map)

Kete are an awesome alternative to plastic bags and KareNZ Kitz will be in Stratford for this workshop as part of Plastic Free July. Thanks to the Stratford District Council, for organizing this event we have a warm venue to weave in.
I supply all the harakeke, and a photocopy of my book to each student which has the karakia - prayer, waiata - song, tikanga - traditions, and instructions on how to harvest harakeke and to weave the kete waikawa - shopping bag. Also kupu hou - new words and activities for children, eg word search, colouring in pages.

We start with a Karakia - prayer, then we sing a waiata - song.
Learn about Tikanga - correct way to harvest harakeke.
Raranga - Weave your own Kete Waikawa - Shopping Bag.
Harakeke Kete - bag/basket are very practical and have many uses. You too CAN a useful bag to take shopping, to the beach, or to give away as a gift.
