Sustainable Taranaki partners with Let’s Compost to bring home composting workshops to the New Plymouth district. Funded by New Plymouth District Council through the Waste Levy Fund, these workshops aim to inspire and support people to reduce food and garden waste going to landfill, and to turn it into a valuable resource for the garden. During each workshop three composting systems are covered - compost bins, worm farms and bokashi.
About The Workshops
Each workshop is hosted by a different organisation, such as a kindergarten, with the aim of creating a community of composters who will offer mutual support following each workshop. Where places are available for participants from the wider community, we’ll let you know through Sustainable Taranaki’s Facebook page and newsletter.
After completing a workshop, each household receives an offer of a $40 discount off the purchase of one of the three composting systems.
Households are sometimes unable to afford to purchase the compost system they want. We have created a modest sponsorship fund to help make composting more accessible for all, and during 2018 were able to contribute towards three households’ compost systems. If you are able to help by donating to the fund, Sustainable Taranaki would love to hear from you.
How Can I Participate?
If you think your organisation would make a good host, please get in touch. As a host you need to be able to offer a venue large enough for three compost stations to be set up (outside is OK, but preferably there’s also an all-weather option), and space suitable for hands-on composting activities. If you already have composting set up on site, that’s excellent, you can still be a host for your organisation’s community. If not, and you’d like to get set up, Let’s Compost can provide a few tips on how to get started in your organisation. We can also provide a compost system of your choice as a thank you gift.
If you would like to attend a workshop please contact the Let’s Compost team. We will keep you up date to dates as places become available at workshops throughout the year.
