30 years of Sustainability in Taranaki

Sustainable Taranaki recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary at the TSB Theatre Royal. Attendees included founding trust members, previous trustees and staff, and organisation partners and sponsors. Nearly 100 people gathered to commemorate the organisation's past, present and future, and the event was filled with laughter, joyful moments, kind words and an overwhelming sense of support and gratitude for how far we've come together.

We were considered to be tree-hugging hippies but to bring about change, you need people on the edge. So we took risks. We were ridiculed in some cases. They thought we were silly... But now you have Sustainable Taranaki.
— Ray Hope, Programme Staff 1991 - 2014

Originally known as the Taranaki Environmental Education Trust, Sustainable Taranaki began with a group of friends who thought outside the box and were considered progressive for their time. We have now come a long way where we are a solid professional organisation supporting businesses and community members to make positive changes to better our environment. The Trust has a strong vision for the future focused on a food-resilient community, where walking, biking and public transport are the norm and people, groups, schools, neighbours and whanau are connected by working together towards positive behavioural change.

To add to the festivities, a special live performance from Andre from Sonic Delusion created the perfect atmosphere for guests to catch up with friends from both the past and present. The event, made possible by the generosity of TOI, was a way to celebrate all the important milestones and people who have contributed to the Trust and its significant progress over the years.

It was a special evening that highlighted the past and recent achievements and allowed everyone who shaped Sustainable Taranaki to look forward to the next 30 years together

The video above captures the heart of Sustainable Taranaki, why it was founded and how its vision remains the same after 30 years... Key trustees give life to our kaupapa and the many exciting steps ahead.

Thank you to Mad Media for their great mahi and support.
