The new sustainable market in Taranaki aiming to Zero Waste!

A few months ago, Brooklyn created the Pickers Market in Ngāmotu New Plymouth, a local market combining sustainability and community. She tells us more about her idea and the creation of this new local & sustainable event!

Last year my family and I relocated from Auckland to Taranaki. Having a small business, Little Nifty, was a passion I wanted to continue. Balancing this with being a full time Mum, leaving Auckland provided less opportunities to easily attend a range of local markets that cater for small businesses. Having been involved in this space in Auckland, I realised the benefit an indoor craft market may have to the New Plymouth community. Such as, The Pickers Market was born.

I had the vision of combining all the things I love about Auckland markets, with a special focus on my regular haunt: Central Flea. The Pickers Market centralises around sustainability and community with a zero-waste twist

The Pickers Market centralises around sustainability and community with a zero-waste twist.

As a customer when you visit the market, you’ll discover a treasure trove of handmade, secondhand, locally grown goods provided plastic-free and even package-free. Likewise, as a stall holder, you’ll find yourself amongst local creatives, not mass produced, plastic-packaged imports. We’re here to try and keep things fair for both you AND the planet

Want to grab something to eat while exploring the market? We supply a crockery library which includes mugs, plates, cutlery, and a water refill station. Our food vendors serve onto the crockery and when you’ve finished noshing you can drop off your used crockery to our zero-waste bin station to be washed by our volunteers and reused over and over again

Since our first market in August, The Pickers Market has now doubled in size and expanded out onto the lawn; thus too, have our jobs. We’re in dire need of volunteers to help keep our zero-waste wheels in motion. So, if you are keen to join our market family, get in touch! We’d love to have some more friendly faces on the team.

Similarly, if you have just started a business or have an excess of secondhand goods and/or garden vege/preserves/eggs etc don’t hesitate to get in touch to become a stall holder!

We’re loving being a part of the Taranaki community and the market family we have built thus far. We are looking forward to hosting more of you over the Summer market period.

You can find The Pickers Market inside Ferndale Hall and on the lawn on the last Sunday of every month (Christmas market December 10th) from 10am-2pm.
