Re-Create with 'Waste' Plastics - Junction Art Class

“What a wonderful morning my daughter and I had. Sophie was so engaged all morning, wouldn’t even stop for morning tea! Her creativity was full steam ahead.” - Kylie and Sophie

A group of parents and children attended our workshop during the school holidays, and got creative in making artwork from colourful plastics that would have otherwise gone to landfill. It was great fun working together to piece random plastics together to create everything from rainbows, butterflies, forests, trees, and even squirrels, all of which were inspired by nature.

Sunset & Wayne, the artists/facilitators provided inspiration to the adults and children, and as soon as “Fantasy Forest” theme was suggested, the little minds went crazy.

The workshop also offered an important talking point for the children learning about how we manage plastics and recycling in our region. The Junction - Zero Waste Hub is where all of our green bin recycling goes to be sorted and then sold to companies. There is a large window at the centre where this process can be viewed.

It was well set up and great that everyone could make what they wanted from all the selection of recycled plastics available. Help was on offer if needed, and Jen was great - a cheery facilitator!

Sophie ( 6 years) turned some recyclables into, a rainbow, pot of gold, cat, toadstool, flowers, bird & butterfly — which lended to a busy morning.  She couldn’t resist bringing the rainbow home! Once home, she didn’t stop and more crafting ensued, turning our plastic bottles into flowers to put with her rainbow in the garden.

My son had a blast, and we are submitting an upcycled plastic/wood dragon to a bookstore competition as we've carried on the ideas at home. My butterfly is currently brightening my daughters room and my son shows off his rainbow to visitors. - Britt and Zeke
