The Future of Transport: What's your vision for Taranaki?

Transport Is 50% Of Our Emissions From Hydrocarbons And Something We Can Act On Right Now.

Join us this 8th of April 6:30 pm at the New Plymouth Club to decide what you will do differently after hearing about our cleaner, cheaper and healthier transport choices today. First, gain speaker insights on the He Pou a Rangi/ Climate Change Commission Report and the alternative travel choices available in Taranaki (EVs, active transport, car sharing, digital working).

Then there will be some challenges to help realise sustainable transition keeping the waste pyramid for travel in mind.

Reduce, share transport, then electrify….

The gathering will conclude with future vision stories of how transport could look differently. Finally, everyone will break out into groups to discuss what we envision for the long-term and what we can start doing now.

The Event Agenda

  • Why our travel needs to change now & why the obvious answers are not enough , presented by Jamie Silk, from Silk Advisory and Trustee of Sustainable Taranaki

  • Active travel choices, presented by Rui Leitão, Manager of the Transportation Infrastructure Group

  • The benefits of EVs, presented by Electricarna organiser, Steve Hobo-Tuck

  • Car sharing and the story of the local app startup, presented by the couple behind the Link car sharing app.

  • Digital working

  • Envisioning future transport

  • Workshopping the future choices and infrastructure we need and what we can do right now

Sample Scenarios To Get You Thinking

The Progressive:

  • Build the regional strategy and integrate Let's Go initiatives that promote the use of alternative transport, such as e-bikes & scooters.

  • Expand cycle routes, EV charging locations

  • Step up behaviour change campaigns & urban experiments

This option is a long shot when it comes to delivering the radical change needed in 10 years, considering the 47% transport reduction required by 2035 per CCC.

The Pragmatic

  • Integrate a step change in urban form and structure of the CBD.

  • Apply disincentives to central and major worksite parking with an orchestrated car/ ride sharing program that invests to really make this option flexible & convenient enough to tackle the barriers folks perceive.

  • Childcare and school time flexibility & assurance of a late transport option to satellite communities

  • Invest in digital and social innovation to support a new streetscape and commuter movements.

  • Gain commitment from employers & developers to invest in clean transport solutions.

This option uses carrots, regulations, & digital solutions to drive change from the top down. Offering incentives like permits for building and expansion in the CBD can curtail the need for parking lots.

The Prospective

  • Engineer three tram routes to pick up the main travel needs.

    • ie. Bell Block to Spotswood, with connections to industrial parks, schools, hospital and CBD.

  • Combine a central transportation system that is fast, efficient, reliable and caters to major commuter routes with connections to bikeways and undercover walking paths to workplace hubs.

  • Strategically place car share lots, bike sheds, walkways & multimodal "connector" options.

  • Encourage urban villages, maximise CBD space and construct dense city development.

This weaves the previous two options together & also takes a step further to engineer and fully integrate a backbone to the future of transport in Taranaki. Think Epcot in Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

This event is supported by Venture Taranaki and the TSB Community Trust
