What is the Pivot Award?
The Pivot Award is a partnership between Massey University and the Bashford-Nicholls Trust that supports research and innovation projects to benefit the Taranaki region, with a focus on its agriculture, horticulture, and veterinary sectors. It funds projects that apply or translate research to create positive social, economic, and environmental change for Taranaki communities, businesses, and industries.
This year, Green Loop has been successful in receiving this award!

Why is Green Loop involved with this research support?
Green Loop is transforming post-consumption food waste into living compost using a pre-composting fermentation process before turning the materials into living compost, using the static pile composting system. This compost isn’t just nutrient-rich—it’s teeming with beneficial microbes, creating a dynamic soil enhancer that supports soils and healthier ecosystems. Green Loop aims to future-proof agriculture and horticulture, improving soil health and resilience for generations to come and closing the loop regarding organic waste management in Taranaki.

What will happen now with this new scientific collaboration?
In collaboration with Massey University and Fuller Light Ltd., Green Loop is testing nanopore sequencing, Soil Food Web microscopy and eDNA technologies to study microbial communities within the compost. This research ensures quality, safety, and maximises ecological benefits, setting new benchmarks for sustainable farming practices.
The Pivot Award recognises Green Loop as a model for the circular economy, turning locally created, hard-to-compost organic ‘waste’ into a resource while advancing science, offering education and strengthening local farm/food systems.
