Reusable Container Campaign

We live in an increasingly throw-away society. Through buying quality products and caring, buying second-hand to give something another life, or upcycling what you have into another use, you’re able to reuse valuable products.

Reusable Container Campaign - What is it?

Sustainable Taranaki is working with New Plymouth District Council on a BYO Container Campaign, as a follow-on from the "Bring it" Coffee Cup Campaign. We are working with businesses to explore messaging around reusables throughout the campaign and creating a public directory listing to highlight the businesses who accept reusable containers and/or provide incentives if customers choose to do so.

The public campaign also involves New Plymouth residents. We are encouraging residents to get into the habit of bringing their own clean containers for shopping and meals out. Promotion of the campaign will be seen via the Sustainable Taranaki and NPDC websites, videos, social and print media, and public events.

What you can do

Buy quality reusable products. Make a lasting investment and save money over the lifetime of the item. Goods you can purchase as alternatives to single-use items include durable stainless steel pegs, lunch boxes, water bottles, and straws, and coffee mugs, beeswax wraps, silicone container covers, and baking sheets, and many more.

Look out for the council directory coming soon!

TIPS to remembering reusables

1. Bring your reusable. Leave your reusable coffee cup, container, and cutlery in an easy-to-remember location. Putting items in a day bag with your keys, wallet, and phone is a great way to ensure you don’t forget!

2. Use what you have. Reusables don’t need to be expensive or fancy, a mug from home does the trick! A well-washed reused container such as an ice cream container works great as food BYO containers. Clean glass jars make great coffee cups and/or smoothie vessels. BYO cutlery, wrapped in a cloth napkin from home also works-a-treat.

3. Eat and drink in! Make time to stay. This is the simplest way to avoid single-use throwaway containers. Plan your day and seclude time to relax while you eat and drink at your eatery and/or café of choice.

Spot the signs!

You should know that 3 New Plymouth cafes are testing our messaging, as shown in the sign below, to help customers remember to bring their own takeaway containers.

Thanks again to Elixir West Cafe & Catering, antsnacks the lunch bar, and Elixir Cafe for being the first movers on the reusable container front! You are helping to make our Taranaki more thriving and environmentally harmonious.
